It is the latest of 24 installments in the NBA 2K franchise based on the National Basketball Association (NBA). The game was released on September 9, 2022, for all mainstream gaming platforms, including PC, Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Cover athletes for the game include Phoenix Suns shooting guard Devin Booker, NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, American rapper J. Cole, and WNBA stars Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi. The former is on the cover of the standard and digital deluxe versions of the game and Michael Jordan embellishes the cover of the Michael Jordan Edition and the Championship Edition. J. Cole is on the cover of Dreamer Edition, and Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are on the cover of the WNBA Edition.
