George R.R. Martin is an incredibly well-known fantasy author who specializes in creating strange and often brutal fantasy worlds that come with their own complicated histories and cultures. Fans may see him as the ideal collaborator to work on the story and world of a From Software game, which tend to take place in strange and brutal fantasy worlds with complicated histories. George R.R. Martin’s involvement with Elden Ring has been a major selling point throughout Elden Ring’s marketing, and it seems to have paid off.

In a recent blog post, George R.R. Martin reflected on his work with the Elden Ring team, starting with the day Hidetaka Miyazaki and the other developers reached out to him. He stated that the Elden Ring developers wanted him to create the backstory and history for their new game - a task that would end up introducing grand, mythological heroes like Godfrey to Elden Ring’s world. The author adds that he finished his part of the collaboration years ago and then sat back to watch the game come together. Apparently, the game is now finished, and it looks amazing.
According to the blog post, George R.R. Martin doesn’t have a lot of experience playing video games, much less making them. He stated that he once played strategy games like Railroad Tycoon, but he doesn’t appear to have been familiar with From Software’s body of work before this collaboration. Regardless, the offer was apparently too exciting for him to refuse. Although Elden Ring’s in-game text wasn’t written by George R.R. Martin, the game’s history and backstory was, and the influence definitely shows.
As of writing, it appears that George R.R. Martin’s fans believe his writing will add depth to Elden Ring. However, some replies under the Twitter post linking to his blog openly question why the author was working on a video game instead of his next book. A few users outright demanded that George R.R. Martin get back to work on The Winds of Winter, which has been in progress for roughly a decade. Regardless, it is nice to see that he is excited about the game.
